I was almost hit by a car today- by a dark slightly chubby guy who looked like a Mexican day worker in an old white small pickup truck. Is stereotyping racist? I don’t know, I was furious. (that’s my excuse)
As I was crossing the street and him not slowing down, he came to a halt and gave me the “what are you doing look at the light you stupid whore!” look and the arms up in the air gesture, I looked, and the count down was still at 6 seconds and I responded yelling- “yeah, you’re wrong you fucking asshole!” He kept looking away, a woman behind me was also furious and she was yelling at him too.
I was angry, at his stupidity it seemed but really at my stupidity- I will have paid for his stupidity and his lack of concern for the traffic rules around here, I would be in the hospital with my hip broken or something and collecting nothing from him, since he’s unlicensed illegal immigrant and never to be found, or a minimum wage legal immigrant day worker with 3 kids, whatever.
Anyways, it’s been a long time since I had to yell at a stranger and I was scared, felt naive, uneasy. I don’t know if it was towards getting hit by the car or standing up for myself. Without the woman behind me maybe I would’ve kept it to myself because I do know, it doesn’t make a difference to me, I don’t feel great after yelling and cursing, I have to vent to people afterwards to justify myself anyways.
I guess the point is:
don’t be naive… just because you live in a quiet suburb doesn’t mean that everyone is on the same page. Maybe I miss the city, it does keep you on your toes.
